The Biewer originated in Germany and was developed by Werner and Gertrude Biewer who were breeders of Yorkshire Terriers. In 1984 they discovered a piebald gene occurring in their Yorkshire Terriers and began to breed selectively to produce these blue, white and gold dogs. In 1989 these colored Yorkshire Terriers were accepted as a separate breed by the German dog club, Allgemeiner Club der Hundefreunde Deutschland e.V. (ACH). They were named the "Biewer Yorkshire Terrier a la Pom Pon". Today their name has been changed to just "Biewer" and they are now recognized by the American Rare Breed Association, International All Breed Club, and the North American Kennel Club.

They are loyal and devoted companions with a great sense of humor and love to play. They get along well with children and other dogs. They do not shed, however their fine, silky hair needs frequent grooming. Their weight ranges between 4-8 lbs with a height of up to 8.5 inches. They are ideal and loving companions.
